The beehive grey colour of Saima Wirkkala is as the name suggests, designed by Tapio Wirkkala. Wirkkala wanted to introduce a new colour into the Saima family. He specified it to be of a beehive grey colour and entirely through-dyed material. Wirkkala used the hardwood floor as the floor of his world exhibition tour and some one million people walked on the grey Saima-floor when the tour circulated the globe.

Saima Wirkkala has been produced with the exact same colour recipe as in 1980. The Wirkkala-colour is unique also due to the through-dyeing of the birch veneer slats. Wirkkala like the other through-dyed Saima-floors endures wear without changing colour as the colour treatment reaches all through the surface layer of birch.

Saima Wirkkala won the prestigious international red dot design award in 2009.

Saima Wirkkala is available as 300L/R, 600L and 1200L models.
